02 — How It Works

Three steps to the water.

  1. 01

    Book

Pick a boat and a duration. Pay online in under a minute.

  2. 02

    Unlock

Check your inbox for your lock code. Walk to the racks near the boat launch — kayaks on Rack 09, paddleboards on Rack 10. Your code releases the boat and opens the paddle storage box; life preservers are in the black boxes — no code needed.

  3. 03

    Paddle

Lock the rack back up when you're done. The lake is yours in between.

03 — Plan Your Visit

Show up confident.

Safety first: there is no lifeguard on duty. Life jackets must be worn at all times on the water (they're in the black boxes at the rack). Stay inside the river — never beyond The Spit into the river mouth or the open ocean. Check the tide before you launch. And never drink alcohol or use drugs before or while boating.

A self-service rental works best when you know where you're going and what to throw in the car.

04 — About

One river. Endless marsh. Salt air.

Scituate Adventures is a small, self-service kayak rental on the south shore of the North River estuary — based out of Driftway Conservation Park on Scituate, Massachusetts.

The Herring River off the Driftway is one of the easiest launches on the South Shore — firm sand and gravel, gentle entry, usually glassy in the morning. From there, wind through the salt marsh toward the North River, poke up the quiet side channels at high tide, or ride the current out to The Spit and back. High tide here runs about 45–60 minutes after Boston — time it right and the river does half the work.

A small fleet. A combination lock. A code in your inbox. The lake does the rest.

A boat is a small permission to be elsewhere for a while.

05 — FAQ

Good to know.

How does the booking work?

Pick your boat (kayaks Declan and Maeve, paddleboards Paddy and Rosie), choose a duration, and check out. You'll get a confirmation email with your combination lock code within a few minutes.

Where do I pick up my boat?

Driftway Conservation Park, Scituate. Walk to the racks near the boat launch — the sit-on-top kayaks (Declan and Maeve) are on Rack 09, and the paddleboards (Paddy and Rosie) on Rack 10. Your combination opens the boat lock and the paddle storage box; life preservers are in the black boxes — no code needed.

Do I need experience?

If you've never been on the water, the sit-on-tops (Declan or Maeve) are the easiest start or the SUPs (Paddy or Rosie) — all four are very stable, very forgiving, and easy to climb back onto if you fall off. Stay close to shore, paddle in the morning when winds are usually lighter, and don't venture past the bay's protected curve.

Where are the paddles and life jackets?

In the storage box on the ground beside the boats — one box at each rack (Rack 09 for the kayaks, Rack 10 for the paddleboards). The same combination code from your confirmation page opens the storage box, the lock, and the paddle. One code unlocks everything for your boat.

Wisconsin law requires a properly-fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD on board for every paddler. We provide one with each kayak, and we strongly recommend wearing it the entire time — the North River estuary is cold, even in July.

What if the weather turns?

If conditions are unsafe (small craft advisory, thunderstorms, sustained winds over ~15 mph), don't go out. Call, text, or email us and we'll reschedule or refund. Check the marine forecast for Scituate before you head down to the beach.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes. Reach out at least 24 hours before your booking for a full refund or reschedule. Same-day cancellations due to weather are always honored — just call, text, or email.

What if I'm a little late?

A little late is fine — we get it, the lake is hard to leave. If you're significantly over your booked time and another paddler is waiting, we'd appreciate a quick heads-up.

Can kids paddle? Dogs?

All four boats are single-paddler. A small child can sit in front of a parent on Declan or Maeve (the sit-on-tops) for short, close-to-shore paddles — the open deck makes it easy. SUPs can carry a small child sitting on the deck if a confident adult is steering. PFDs are required for everyone regardless of age — they're in the black boxes at the rack. A small, calm dog can ride along on a sit-on-top or a SUP at your own risk — please dry the boat afterward.
